The Gospels show us something astonishing: the eternal Son of God — the One through whom all things were made — weeping. Not once, but three times. And in each moment, Scripture makes the reason unmistakable: unbelief. Not ignorance, not hostility, not suffering, but the refusal to believe in the One sent to save.
Jesus’ tears reveal His heart. They show us what grieves Him, what moves Him, and what He longs for in those He came to redeem.
Jesus Wept Over Jerusalem — Loudly, Deeply, and Publicly (Luke 19:41–44)
As Jesus approached Jerusalem — the city chosen by God, the city that had witnessed centuries of prophecy, worship, sacrifice, and divine revelation — He wailed.
Luke uses the Greek word klaió, meaning to lament with audible grief. This was not a quiet tear; it was the cry of a broken heart.
Why did He weep?
Because Jerusalem, of all places, should have recognized Him.
Because the spiritual leaders entrusted with God’s truth rejected God’s Messiah.
Jesus wasn’t weeping for Himself. He was weeping for them — for the peace they refused, for the salvation they rejected.
Jesus Wept at Lazarus’ Tomb — Quietly, Personally, and Intimately (John 11:32–45)
John uses a different word: dakruó — “to shed tears quietly.”
Jesus was not grieving Lazarus’ death; He knew He would raise him. His tears were for the people standing around Him, overwhelmed by sorrow yet unable to believe in the One who is “the resurrection and the life.”
He groaned in His spirit — not because death was too strong, but because of their unbelief.
And yet, even in His tears, Jesus prayed aloud so that the people would believe.
And many did.
Jesus Wept as He Faced Separation From His Father (Hebrews 5:7–9)
Hebrews tells us:
“In the days of His flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears…” (Hebrews 5:7)
In Gethsemane, Jesus was “exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death” (Matthew 26:36–38). On the cross He cried out: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46)
Why this agony? Because the One who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Because the curse of the Law fell upon Him (Galatians 3:13). Because the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6).
At that moment, Jesus bore the full weight of human sin — murder, adultery, lying, lust, every form of rebellion. And because God’s eyes are “too pure to look upon evil” (Habakkuk 1:13), the fellowship the Son had enjoyed with the Father from all eternity was severed.
For the first time ever, the Father turned His face away. Jesus cried out because He could not bear the thought of being forsaken by His Father — and He endured it so that we, who believe, would never have to.
The Heart of Jesus Still Breaks for Unbelief
If Jesus wept over unbelief then, He still grieves over unbelief now. And if we love Him, we will love whom He loves — especially the children, the vulnerable, the forgotten, and those who have never heard the hope found only in Messiah Jesus.
The Butterfly Project, named in memory of 4‑year‑old Ariel Bibas, who was brutally murdered by Hamas — a violent extremist organization responsible for severe harm, loss of life, and human rights violations — stands as a testimony that evil will not have the last word.
In Ariel’s name, and in Jesus’ name, children are being fed, cared for, and shown the love of God.
Your generosity is not just charity — it is ministry, mercy, and mission.
It is giving “a cup of cold water” to the little ones Jesus loves. It is participating in the very compassion that moved Jesus to tears.
Thank You for Standing With Us

Shalom and Blessings,
Dr. Jeff
“Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water… verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.” — Matthew 10:42
